“Earthquakes:  Mean Business”

Annual, Free Education & Outreach Event

The annual “Earthquakes:  Mean Business” program will be held on Friday, February 3, 2006 .  This is a free, half-day educational and outreach event for business and industry, held each year during Earthquake Awareness Week (the first week in February). 

            Earthquake Awareness Week is arranged by the regional geoscience, engineering, and emergency management community to showcase the issue of earthquake hazards and earthquake risk in the central US.  The speakers will address:

·       regional earthquake hazards (why earthquakes occur here);

·       a scenario for a “high-magnitude six” earthquake (what we can expect);

·       how earthquake risk can be managed (engineering resources and solutions);

·       a case-study of how one Fortune 50 firm is taking steps to lower its earthquake risk exposure; and

·       an update on the St. Louis Area Earthquake Hazards Mapping Project.

            The “Earthquakes:  Mean Business” program will be held at the AT&T Data Center Auditorium, at Ninth and Chestnut streets in downtown St. Louis .  The doors open at 8:00 am and the program begins promptly at 8:30 .  There will be exhibits and complimentary refreshments.   Public parking is available at street meters and nearby lots.  Additionally, the MetroLink station at 8th and Pine is adjacent to the facility.  

            There is no charge to attend the program.  However, to meet the security requirements of AT&T, all attendees must pre-register by emailing Tim Bonno at tb8851 @ sbc.com before  Wednesday, February 1, 2006 .  Those who are not pre-registered will not be admitted.  The capacity of the AT&T Data Center Auditorium is limited to 350.

·       Chief Joseph Mokwa, St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department 

·       Dave Russ, PhD; Eastern Region Geologist, US Geological Survey ( Reston , Va. );

·       Dave Rogers, PhD; Professor, University of Missouri ( Rolla , Mo. );

·       Nathan Gould, PhD; General Manager, ABS Consulting ( St. Louis , Mo. );

·       Nathan Smith; Insurance Manager & Loss Control, Pfizer ( New York , N.Y. ); and

·       Buddy Schweig, PhD; Central & Eastern Region Coordinator, US Geological Survey ( Memphis , Tenn. ).

            This year, program sponsors include AT&T, the Mid-America Contingency Planning Forum, and the New Madrid Chapter of the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute.  Other program supporters include the US Geological Survey, Downtown St. Louis Emergency Preparedness Organization (D-STEP), the Geology & Society Division of the Geological Society of America, the St. Louis Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the St. Louis Section of the Association of Engineering Geologists, the Central US Earthquake Consortium, and the University of Missouri – Rolla’s Natural Hazards Mitigation Institute.
