The Meeting:
This
months tour was a hot topic for our members and their guest, with everyone
having to maintain fire systems in their facilities. Frank started the meeting
welcoming our guest and making a few AFE announcements while we all ate our
pizza.
Frank introduce our speaker Bruce Morris of Guardian Fire protection and
asked him one question. "Why is the water always white when the sprinklers
go off in those Arnold
Schwarzenegger films?"
Bruce
talked to us about the three types of fire protection systems and their use.
Bruce also gave us some tips on web sites to visit where we could get more
information. One guest had some interesting questions about sprinkler head
recalls, and how different members where handling the situation. As you can see
from the picture on the right, we had a good turnout, but plenty of pizza to go
around.
 Then
we went to the second floor of the Jones Lang LaSalle building for our tour.
They have one 500 GPM pump in the basement that serves two standpipes. For each
floor that has sprinklers, there is a a flow and a tamper switch that
controls the individual floors. The second floor has a pre-action system in the
computer room. This requires two devices to trip prior to the introduction of
water. They are smoke and heat. Companies that require some sort of fire
protection in computer rooms but want to minimize the risk of an accidental
discharge install this type of system. The thinking is by the time heat and
smoke trip the system, the computer equipment is already damaged, so system
trips to keep the fire from spreading to the rest of the building.
To learn more about Fire Protection
Systems please check back here often. We are awaiting valuable information that
out our guest speaker Bruce, will provided.
Hope to see more of you in our engineering ranks at Guarantee Electrical
Co. for our next meeting on the FBI's
role in COUNTERTERRORISM.
Please see our scrapbook
for more pictures.
Thanks Again Guardian Fire
Protection, for the great
time!
